Surcharge

The implementation and maintenance of the statewide Enhanced 9-1-1 system is funded by a monthly surcharge on all subscriber wire line and wireless telephone numbers in Maine. The statute governing the surcharge can be found in 25 MRSA§2927.

July 1, 2010 Surcharge Change

Please be advised that the Maine State Legislature has increased the amount of the E9-1-1 surcharge you are required to collect and submit to the State of Maine effective July 1, 2010.  (See Maine Public Law 2009, Chapter 617.) You are directed to increase the amount of surcharge collected from $.37 to $.45 per line or number/per month beginning in July. 

 

For all services other than pre-paid wireless, remit surcharge monthly to:

Pre-Paid Wireless surcharge as of July 1, 2010

The surcharge applied at point-of-service by a retailer for pre-paid wireless service as of July 1, 2010 is $.45 per retail transaction. It should be remitted to the State Tax Assessor by the retailer in the same manner as sales tax.
